Caen
Capital of Lower Normandy,
hovering between land and sea, Caen
is a provincial metropolis with an
enviable life style. A beautiful historical
town with at its centre a medieval
castle which houses the Normandy Museum
and the Beaux Arts Museum and among
the many bell-towers which make Caen
famous, there are the Abbey aux Dames
and the Abbey aux Hommes. Both of
which were built by the land's most
famous son, William the Conqueror.
They testify to the great era of Norman
builders, traces of which can be seen
all across the Calvados. No visit
to Caen would be complete without
a visit the Memorial Museum which
gives an unmatched understanding of
the mechanism and the unfolding of
the Second World War and the Cold
War.
